Your Bio

Larry is Director for National Organizing with Housing Works, the nation's largest minority controlled HIV & AIDS non profit organization. Larry works to develop and support grassroots advocacy and activist networks which influence politicians and policy that lead to addressing the factors that lead to ending the HIV & AIDS epidemic in the United States and abroad. Diagnosed himself while a freshman football player at Norfolk State University, Larry has a distinct passion that flows far beyond just spreading awareness - actions must be derived through education, purpose, and passion which ultimately and unapologetically lead to measurable outcomes.

A native of Washington DC, Larry is an aspiring professional photographer specializing in non-profit photography, essay work, and civil/social justice photojournalism.

'United In Anger: A History Of ACT-UP' Discussion : On this evening two days past World AIDS Day in Washington DC, five young people discussed the impact of HIV & AIDS activism in today's society after viewing the documentary 'United In Anger: A History Of ACT-UP' (http://www.unitedinanger.com/view-united-in-anger-actup-documentary-trailer/). Some of the questions posed by the moderators: "Given the activities over the past few days commemorating World AIDS Day, what were your impressions of the film?" "How does advocacy and activism play a role in the HIV & AIDS work you do?" "Thinking about these quotes: 'Power concedes nothing without demand…' - Frederick Douglas 'What AIDS revealed is not a problem with the virus. What AIDS revealed are the problems with society' - Zoe Leonard, ACT UP what do you see as your place in the movement to end AIDS?" Below you will see links to the entire discussion with the panelists. However, the conversation does not end with the video. The panelists have been invited to continue this discussion online with questions from all of you. The event was co-sponsored by The Corcoran Library, presented in partnership with Housing Works and Metro Teen AIDS. 'Getting To Zero In DC' (12.3.12) : Washington DC – Dozens of District residents living with HIV & AIDS, service providers, and allies rallied at the John A. Wilson Building demanding that Mayor Vincent Gray and the DC Commission on HIV & AIDS develop and implement a comprehensive, District-wide strategy that creates the social conditions to promote health and stop the local HIV & AIDS epidemic. The rally demanded leadership from Mayor Gray and his appointed Commission – whose members come from multiple District agencies including housing, education, and corrections – to write, develop, and implement a comprehensive, District-wide strategy that mirrors the goals of the National HIV & AIDS Strategy; (1) reducing the number of new HIV infections, (2) increase access to quality health care and optimizing overall positive health outcomes, (3) reducing HIV-related health disparities, and (4) achieving a more coordinated response to the HIV epidemic. Elements of an effective District strategy should include: • House people living with AIDS on HOPWA waiting list - over 1000 people now; • Housing for all - over 60,000 waiting for subsidized housing; • Jobs for all - over 50% unemployment among youth East of the River; • No cuts in HIV services - keep day treatment programs OPEN; • Comprehensive school health education; • End harassment of women carrying condoms; • Health care, prevention and treatment for all documented and undocumented individuals; • Ease the reentry of the previously incarcerated. The demands stress a single strategy, which will stretch across all sectors including health, education, corrections, and unifies a multi-agency - with community partnership - approach with a specific vision, measureable goals, and objectives. The rally was coordinated by the DC Community Coalition, Mary’s Center, The Women’s Collective, Housing Works, and DC Fights Back. AIDSVote 2012: 'I Am Voting To...' : During the 2012 United States Conference on AIDS in Las Vegas, participants were asked to share what their vote can and will mean in the upcoming elections - local, state, and national elections. Some shared how their vote can impact policy change. Some shared on how their vote influences friends, loved ones, and community members to go to the polls.
